Development of cost-effective phasor measurement unit for wide area monitoring system applications

<span>Sustained growth in the demand with unprecedented investments transmission infrastructure resulted narrow operational margins for power system operators across globe. As a result, networks are operating near to stability limits. This has demanded electrical utilities explore new avenues control and protection of wide area systems. Present supervisory data acquisition/energy management systems (SCADA/EMS) can only facilitate steady state model network, whereas synchrophasor measurements GPS time stamp from provide dynamic view grid that enables supervision, network allow operator take necessary control/remedial measures regime operations. Construction phasor measurement unit (PMU) synchrophasors assessment is widely accepted as an essential component successful execution monitoring (WAMS) applications. Commercial PMUs comes many constraints such cost, proprietary hardware designs software. All these have limited deployment at high voltage alone. paper addresses issues by developing cost-effective PMU open-source hardware, which be easily modified per requirements The proposed device tested IEEE standards.</span>
